Sam's Surgery

Sam had surgery on Tuesday and everything went great. The surgeons took out a part of his intestine and put the "good" parts back together. He has been on pain meds and we are hoping he will need less of them today. We want him to be awake and alert and we want to hold him. It really is no fun looking at him when he is so sedated. But, today will be a good day! He should be able to eat...that will make him very happy. Since he was born, his brother has been sending him pictures to put on his NICU bed!

The Perfect Distraction

The last couple of weeks have been filled with ups and downs and lots of time spent at the hospital. Luckily, we have the perfect distraction. Miles gets funnier and funnier every day.

Hospital Construction

The hospital is in the middle of a big add-on and sometimes it is really noisy inside. Today was especially noisy and the nurses did not want Sam to be disturbed. They gave him some sticky ear muffs to help him relax. Bryce also tried them on to see how they worked.

No more "Tubes"!

They moved Sam to the Level II Nursery from the Level III NICU. His nurses took out the tube in his nose yesterday, which was keeping his stomach empty. He also got to eat! They started giving him Pedialyte, which he he gobbled right up. Hopefully today he will be able to have some milk. His surgeon is hoping to "fatten" him up a bit before his surgery. He has not lost any weight since birth and actually gained a little due to the "food" he is getting through his IV. He weighs 7 lbs. as of last night. Without his tubes, we will need to come up with a new nickname for him...

"Tubes"

Well our new little one was moved into the NICU the morning after he was born and was eventually diagnosed with Hirschsprung's Disease days later. The good news is that it is fixable, the bad news is that the poor little guy has to stay in the hospital for another few weeks. He is having surgery on July 29th to fix his intestines so that they work the way they are supposed to work. He should recover just fine and have no lasting side effects. He is a trooper and is described by his nurses as strong, good-natured, calm, and sweet (he really is just like Miles!). He is a lot bigger than the other babies in the NICU and doesn't look like he belongs there because he looks incredibly healthy. He has great nurses, doctors, and surgeons...we just can't wait to have him at home where he belongs! He has lots of tubes in and on him so he has earned the nickname "Tubes"!

A few hours old..

Sam came into this world rather quickly on Saturday, July 12th @ 8:05 p.m. He looks just like his brother...almost identical. We'll see as he grows!

Dressing Up

I think he needs a toolbelt.

I heard him giggling in the other room and
this is what I found him doing.
